Illustration of substrateā€“substrate interactions in cardiac metabolism as determined in a man resting or engaged in easy, 40% VO2max exercise. Results show that the contribution of lactate to cardiac energy need depends on arterial lactate concentration and is significantly greater than that of glucose.
