Precipitant Drug Effect Description
Beta blockers (atenol, propanol) Caffeine effect is similar with and without β blockers. Caffeine reduces the antihypertensive effect of these drugs
Cimetidine (Tagamet®, Zantac®) Caffeine hepatic metabolism may be impaired, increasing caffeine
Disulfiram (Antabuse®)
Fluoroquinolones (Cipro®, norfloxacin) half‐life and caffeine effect
Terbinafine (Lamisil®)
Contraceptives, oral (Ortho‐Cyclen®, Alesse™, Triphasil®)
Mexiletine (Mexitil®) Caffeine elimination may be reduced 30%–50% (effect may be greater)
Phenylpropanolamine (Accutrim®, Dexatrim®) Serum caffeine levels may be increased Caffeine effects are enhanced
