ACE2 as a key contributor to SARS-CoV-2 infection in metabolic organs. ACE2 is widely expressed in metabolic organs including liver, pancreas, heart, and gut. SARS-CoV-2 infection evokes notable downregulation of ACE2 and consequent imbalance of ACE/ACE2, thereby causing virus-induced damage and dysfunction in metabolic organs and consequent worsen metabolic complications in patients with COVID-19.
