Study characteristics
Methods Randomised controlled trial.
Participants Preterm infants < 30 weeks' gestation, postnatal age < 24 hours.
Exclusions: infants with major congenital anomalies, or signs of pre‐existing skin infection.
Interventions 1. Topical coconut oil (5 mL/kg) twice daily: N = 36
2. Standard skin care (no emollient): N = 36
Intervention applied for up to 21 days.
Outcomes Skin condition until day 21.
Weight gain.
Invasive infection.
Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC).
Mortality.
Cognitive, language, motor or socio‐emotional delay assessed at 24 months (corrected age) using Bayley Scales of Infant Development (3rd Edition).
