Autologous ex vivo gene therapy. In the course of an autologous ex vivo gene therapy, epidermal stem cells are initially isolated from a skin biopsy of a patient. Upon gene correction via gene replacement or genome-editing strategies, the genetically corrected cells are expanded to epidermal sheets, which are subsequently transplanted back onto the patient.
