Orthologs of the human eNEMAL sequence were queried by BLAST and BLAT searches using NCBI and Ensembl chordate nucleotide databases. Chromosomes or contings that hold the MALAT1 locus were retrieved and aligned. Results with 50% identity over at least 50% of sequence length were considered for orthologs; the only sequences which satisfied these conditions were from primates. Sequences were aligned by MEGA X MUSCLE algorithm and accession numbers for each sequence are provided in S3 Fig.
