Cold exposure physiologically induces the browning process by sympathetic fiber innervation via a β3-adrenergic stimulation of white adipose tissue (WAT). The beige phenotype, enriched with mitochondria, allows for non-shivering thermogenesis like brown adipocytes due to the expression of UCP1.
