HO-1 regulates the trafficking of normal hematopoietic stem progenitor cells (HSPCs) and leukemic cells. a HO-1 is an inhibitor of the complement cascade (ComC) and the Nlrp3 inflammasome, which are both required for optimal mobilization of HSPCs from bone marrow into peripheral blood and their migration, homing, and engraftment after transplantation. It has been found that inhibition of HO-1 promotes all these processes. b HO-1 inhibits the trafficking of leukemic cells. Therefore, enhancing the activity of HO-1 in leukemic cells by HO-1 activators may be helpful in preventing their migration and unwanted systemic spread and metastasis
