Toy and Pointed are required to prevent formation of an ectopic antenna. (A) The pnt gene is transcribed within the region of the eye-antennal disc that gives rise to the second antenna. (arrow). (B,C) Knockdown of pnt expression alone does not alter the number of antennae that are produced within the eye-antennal disc. (D,E) However, if Pnt and Toy are knocked down simultaneously, then a second ectopic antenna forms in place of the head epidermis. This appears identical to when Toy and NURF are both knocked down.
