Constriction responses of the pulmonary arteries and veins to phenylephrine. Concentration-response curves to phenylephrine in segments of rats (N = 6–8) pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins. The number of rats is the number of repetitions of each group. After pretreatment with propranolol or N[gamma]-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) or both, arteries and veins were exposed to increasing concentrations of phenylephrine. Control group directly exposed to phenylephrine. Asterisk indicates artery segments pretreated with L-NAME were significance than segments pretreated with propranolol and combine propranolol and L-NAME. There were no significant difference in pulmonary arteries tension between pretreated with propranolol and combine propranolol and L-NAME. There were no significant difference in pulmonary veins tension among all groups. Where no error bar is visible the SEM is within the symbol. “*” means p < 0.05; “**” means p < 0.01.
