Groups of four- to six-week-old male Golden Syrian hamsters were subcutaneously infected with 1 × 104 cells of L. interrogans serovar Manilae strain UP-MMC-SM. The leptospires used for injection were cultured for (A) less than 1 month and (B) 1 (black), 2 (blue), 3 (red), 4 (green), and 7 (purple) months in Korthof’s medium after in vivo passage.
