Mean detection thresholds of all participants across four frequencies and three mean masker-level ranges. Means ± SDs of the fixed-level detection thresholds are plotted in open symbols. Means ± SDs of the roving-level detection thresholds are plotted in solid symbols. All 12 NH listeners (left column, black) were tested at three masker levels (left column; Low (L): 25 to 40 dB SPL; Mid (M): 65 dB SPL; High (H): 80 dB SPL). Depending on the degree of hearing loss at the test frequency, listeners with SNHL (right column, red) completed testing at one to three masker levels. Listeners with NH had slightly increased roving-level detection thresholds (≈1 dB on average across all test conditions) compared with fixed-level thresholds. Listeners with SNHL had a more pronounced separation between fixed- and roving-level detection thresholds, ranging from 2.3 to 5.2 dB across frequency. NH indicates normal hearing; SNHL, sensorineural hearing loss.
