Enterohepatic circulation. Tissue expression locations of BA transporters ASBT (oval) and NTCP (rectangle) and BA binding protein FXR (triangle) discussed in this review are indicated. BAs are generated in the liver from cholesterol, stored in the gallbladder and then enter the duodenum in the small intestine. The gut microbiota in the small intestine and colon convert primary BAs into secondary BAs. Most (95%) BAs are actively reabsorbed in the ileum or passively reabsorbed in the jejunum and colon and recycled through enterohepatic circulation.
