Quantitative polymerase chain reaction of hypoxia inducible factor responsive genes. Erythropoietin (EPO), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and glucose transporter 1 (GLUT 1) mRNA levels were assessed in three independent tissue samples from different regions of the kidney. EPO RNA, but not GLUT 1 or VEGF, RNA levels tended to be higher in the diabetic kidney. EPO RNA levels were highest in diabetic rats treated with dapagliflozin (DAPA) for all three tissue samples (#; p < 0.041 vs. Control Vehicle and Control DAPA; one‐way ANOVA on Ranks).
