Band 3 imaged by freeze-fracture (micrographs a and c) and negative staining (micrograph b). Note the vesicles (arrows) in the overview and enlarged in the inset of micrograph a and the ring-like aggregates (arrowheads) of proteins in the enlarged images b and c. The dimensions of the ring-like structures were measured in negative-stained samples (micrograph b) with 4.1 ± 0.4 nm in diameter and 1.5 ± 0.2 nm for the hole in the middle. After freeze-fracture preparation (micrograph c), the ring-like structures were measured with 4.0 ± 0.6 nm in diameter and 1.5 ± 0.2 nm for the hole in the middle. For better display, the digitized pictures were adjusted for brightness and contrast. The scale bars are indicated
