MPE treatment promotes the depletion of thiol group content. For these experiments, 10⁶ cells/condition were incubated for different times (12, 24, and 48 h) with 360 μg/mL MPE, and then the amount of protein and free thiol groups was assessed, as reported in the Materials and Methods section. The values, expressed as nmol/10⁵ cells, are the mean of three independent experiments ± S.E. (*) p < 0.05 and (**) p < 0.01 versus untreated control.
