Experimental design of sun exposure using artificial sunlight. Cap surface samples from the mushroom caps of Lentinula edodes were taken before treatments (left side) and after the treatments (right side). Mushrooms were subjected to artificial sun exposure from a distance of 10 cm, creating a cap surface temperature of ca. 30°C. We exposed the mushroom cap for 5, 30, and 60 min and then sampled ca. 1 cm3 piece, which we directly transferred into liquid nitrogen for further processing (RNA extraction, sequencing). The temperature was measured using an infrared thermometer. We used a total of four controls and three replicates per time point
