Figure 1

Signaling of 5-HTR2C in POMC neurons generating food intake. Activation of αq/11 promotes phospholipase C (PLC) to produce diacylglycerol (DAG) and inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3). IP3 promotes release of intracellular calcium (Ca2+) while DAG binds to downstream effector protein kinase C (PKC), both of which activates c-Fos via the extracellular regulated kinase pathway (ERK). C-Fos turns on the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) promoter, which signals to neurons regulating the food intake signal. This signal is also regulated by 5-HTR2C agonist and serotonin.
