Metabolism of non-canonical sphingolipids. SPT enzyme can utilize L-alanine as a substrate, instead of L-serine, which leads to the formation of a family of atypical sphingolipid metabolites. The exact metabolic pathway of this lipid family is still elusive. SPT, serine palmitoyl transferase; 3-KDHR, 3-keto-reductase; CerS, ceramide synthases; FADS3, fatty acid desaturase 3; CDase, ceramidase; DEGS1/2, desaturase 1/2; CYP4F, cytochrome P450 (CYP)4F enzymes.
