Different risk factors of COVID-19 such as imbalance in commensal microbiota, metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity, and aging are characterized by dysregulation of lipid metabolism. This imbalance in lipid metabolism causes dysfunctional immune cells like macrophages, which contribute to the severity of COVID-19 disease.
