Schematic overview of the effect of vitamin B12 on the metabolism of methylmalonic acid and homocysteine. Nitrous oxide (N2O) oxygenates the core of vitamin B12 (B12), leading to inactivation and functional vitamin B12 deficiency. This results in elevated levels of methylmalonic acid and homocysteine.
