In absence of EBNA2, CIITA enhancer is active and HLA-II gene expression is high. In presence of EBNA2, DEXI enhancer is activated, competing with CIITA promoter situated in a neighboring and bounded chromosome compartment. EBNA2 decrease of CIITA causes decrease in HLA-II expression.
