Table 6. Take home messages for optimized management of cancer patients during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Sr. no. Message
Abbreviations: COVID-19, coronavirus disease 2019; LMWH, low molecular weight heparin.
1 Patients with cancer should take strict precautions to reduce the risk of being infected with COVID-19.
2 Cancer patients should be given priority for COVID-19 vaccination—as vulnerable patients.
3 If exposed or infected with COVID-19, cancer patients should be considered at higher risk of morbidity and mortality.
4 When cancer patients come to health care facilities to undergo treatment (suggesting that their cancer is yet to be controlled), additional precautions are necessary to ensure their exposure to potential COVID-19 virus is minimized.
5 Cancer patients with COVID-19 infections should be treated aggressively to prevent development of any thromboembolic complication.
6 If cancer patients with COVID-19 infections develop a thromboembolic complication, their risk of dying are significantly higher.
7 All patients (including noncritically ill) who require hospital admission for COVID-19 infection should receive pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis with LMWH, fondaparinux, or similar agents—unless there is increased bleeding risk.
