(b) Device architecture: nanometer-separated graphene source and drain electrodes are electroburnt from a graphene ribbon between two gold electrodes. The graphene is patterned into a bowtie shape, and a local gate electrode separated from the molecule by a thin layer of HfO2 (grey) is used to shift the molecular energy levels. For clarity, the bulky side-groups are omitted.
