Type of intervention Considerations
Mitral valve repair
  • Treatment of choice

  • Rheumatic patients: less favorable results.

  • Prolapse of the posterior cusp of the mitral valve (isolated P2): better results.

Mitral valve replacement
  • Indicated in cases where valve repair is not possible.

Percutaneous mitral valve repair
  • Reserved for high-risk patients or patients with surgical contraindication and refractory symptoms

  • Degenerative MR due to prolapse

  • Favorable anatomical conditions

  • Indicated following decision by the Heart Team
