Species in the study. Number of males (NM) and females (NF) from each species, size range of the specimens used, and their origin and conservation status according to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) criteria for the Mediterranean: not evaluated (NE), least concern (LC), near threatened (NT), vulnerable (VU), endangered (EN), and critically endangered (CR). Animals in aquaria (AQ) were part of the Oceanogràfic zoological collection. Animals from commercial fisheries were captured by gill net or bottom trawling and sold in fish markets (FM) or discarded as by-catch (BC). Stranded animals (ST) were recovered by the Comunitat Valenciana Stranding Network.
