Comparison of characteristically healthy and sarcopenic muscle, in young and older adults. Essential RONS signaling is apparent in young healthy muscle during contraction but becomes greater with advancing age at rest. Effective and proportionate regulation of RONS could be influenced by several modifiable and non-modifiable factors, with the capacity for self-regulation becoming less efficient with age. The lower half of the figure indicates the consequences of poorly aged muscle, with specific interventions supporting healthy muscle aging and RONS regulation, even in the presence of increased RONS production.
