Lateral force variations during sliding reported for calcite carrying a patchy stearic acid layer under dry (<5%RH, top row), humid (≈75%RH, middle row), and redried (<5%RH, bottom row) conditions and increasing applied force. The first column contains data recorded at 100 nN, middle column data at 200 nN, and third column data at 300 nN. The sliding speed was 1 μm/s in all cases.
