Normal function of DICER1. DICER1 resides in the cytoplasm where it receives pri-miRNAs that are actively transported from the nucleus. Upon recognition of their dsRNA hairpin motif, DICER1 makes two single-stranded nicks that liberate two distinct populations of miRNAs: the 3p and 5p microRNAs. These then associate with Argonaute and inhibit the translation of specific miRNAs. (A higher resolution/colour version of this figure is available in the electronic copy of the article).
