400 eligible patients. 117 excluded after randomisation. 283 enrolled in the study.
All patients above 12 years of age.
Patients already receiving antibiotics or steroids, diabetic and preoperative diagnosis of perforated appendix, were excluded before randomisation.
The study has 4 subgroups (see Chiam 1983 A & B).

Interventions |
Treatment group: Cotrimoxazole 2 ml i.m preoperatively and twice daily for 3 days
Placebo group: Not specified, regime as above. |
