Fig. 2 — Effect of suramin on interleukin (IL)-1β-induced anabolic and catabolic factors expression in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells. Sub-confluent NP cells were pretreated with 10 μM suramin for one hour, and then followed by treatment with 10 ng/ml IL-1β for 24 hours. Total RNA were extracted for real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of collagen 2A (Col2a1), aggrecan, Col10a1, SRY-Box Transcription Factor 5 (Sox5), Sox6, Sox9, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS)-4, ADAMTS-5, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-13, and MMP-3 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression. Data represent means and standard deviations (n = 3 to 5) (**p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001 compared with untreated control or IL-1β treated group).
