Linalool decreases oxidative stress-induced cell death by regulating glutamate metabolism in the hippocampus (modified from Sabogal-Guaqueta et al. 2019 [27]). In several neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and neuroinflammation, glutamate induces cysteine influx into the cytoplasm and stimulates oxidative stress, thus inducing apoptosis. Linalool prevents ROS generation and Ca2+ activation in the mitochondria in the cornu ammonis 1 and 3 and dentate gyrus in the hippocampal regions of the brain.
