Exogenous AQs do not restore pqsA expression in P. aeruginosa tatA (A) or tatA ΔpqsA (B) mutants. Exogenous PQS or HHQ was added at 5 μM or 20 μM to (A) wild type, the tatA mutant and complemented tatA mutant or (B) ΔpqsA, ΔpqsA tatA or tatA ΔpqsA mutant complemented with tatA. Maximal light output from the chromosomal pqsA’-lux fusion was recorded as a function of growth (RLU/OD600).
