Animal experimental design. To create two groups with different microbiota compositions, rats were gavaged daily with either amoxicillin (AMX) or water (H2O), as conventional control, from one week before and during whey product interventions. Brown Norway rats were administered one of four different whey products in their drinking water or water alone, ad libitum for three weeks. Subsequently, all rats were post-immunised by weekly intraperitoneal (ip) injections with intact whey (iW) for sensitisation for four weeks. The day before euthanisation, rats were subjected to an ear-swelling test by intradermal injection of iW. Blood and faecal samples were collected throughout the study on the indicated days.
