Elevated baseline sST2 (soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2) concentrations are associated with mortality and need for mechanical ventilation at Day 29. Baseline sST2 concentration and mSOFA score were higher in patients who were dead or mechanically ventilated at Day 29 compared with those breathing without assistance. Baseline IL-6 concentration was not different between groups. Data are represented as box plots of median and interquartile range, with whiskers indicating minimum and maximum values.
