Role of deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) in ubiquitin–ubiquitin and ubiquitin–substrate linkages. DUBs can cleave the ubiquitin–substrate bond, rendering the substrate free of ubiquitins (rearranging), modifying the structure of the polyubiquitin chain by removing ubiquitin–ubiquitin linkages (editing) and recycling the ubiquitin associated with proteasomal degradation.
