Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and nitric oxide (NO) physiological effects. eNOS produces NO starting from L-arginine and oxygen. NO has several beneficial effects on the vasculature. It is involved in atheroprotection and vasodilation. It contrasts oxidative stress, inflammation, platelet dysfunction and smooth muscle cell proliferation. eNOS: endothelial nitric oxide synthase; NO: nitric oxide; O2: oxygen.
