Table 2.
Estimated electrical properties of RBCs in different ionic media.
Measured ζ (V) | Estimated Vm from GHK (V) | Vm (V) | Estimated ψSt (V) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
NaCl | − 0.0091 ± 0.0027 | − 0.014 | 0.0058 | − 0.034 |
KCl | − 0.0108 ± 0.0012 | − 0.001 | 0.0008 | − 0.028 |
NaCl/KCl (50:50) | − 0.0090 ± 0.0021 | − 0.008 | 0.0030 | − 0.028 |
CaCl2 | − 0.0027 ± 0.0026 | − 0.060 | 0.0088 | − 0.030 |
The measured value of ζ in different ionic media, together with the calculated value of Vm for each medium determined using the GHK equation. We used the calculated value of Vm to determine a Ξ = 0.27, and determine ζ’ using Eq. (5). This was used in Eq. (4) to estimate ψSt due solely to the surface charge, which showed a high degree of similarity across the four cases.
