Proliferating cells require glycolysis and mitochondrial metabolism. Proliferating cells use extracellular nutrients (glucose, amino acids, and oxygen) to fuel glycolysis and its subsidiary pathways, including pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) and one-carbon metabolism, as well as mitochondrial metabolism for the production of lipids, proteins, and nucleotides.
