Immunologic changes

Reduced lymphocyte proliferative response

Elevation of progesterone, human chorionic gonadotropin, alpha fetoprotein, and cortisol may also inhibit cell-mediated immune function

Physiologic changes

Increase in oxygen consumption

Increase in lung water

Elevation of diaphragm

Aspiration more likely in labor and delivery
