Under normal physiological conditions, mitochondrial oxidative respiratory chain composed of complex I–IV can transfer electrons and H⁺ and produce ATP together with ATP synthase. When complex I–IV is dysfunctional, electron leakage occurs. This leads to the production of ROS and H₂O₂.
