Intracellular Ca²⁺ release is induced by Cx43-containing gap junctions localized in the cell membrane. (A) Cells were incubated with Fura2 (10μM) with or without 2-APB (100μM). TGF-β1 induced [Ca²⁺]_i levels were not changed in Cx43-transfected cells compared to control cells over a short period. However, [Ca²⁺]_i levels were increased in Cx43-overexpressing cells after 180s compared with non-transfected cells.
