Comparison of plasma cholesterol of controls and cows with focal, multifocal or diffuse lesiosn. Samples were selected from the case–control population and grouped according to the presence or absence of visible lesions in gut tissues. Cows with diffuse lesions (N = 26) were associated with decreased cholesterol plasma levels when compared with no visible lesions (N = 474) or with focal (N = 350) and multifocal (N = 32) lesions. The lines extending from the boxes indicate variability outside the upper and lower quartiles. The highest and lowest points are the maximum and the minimum of the data set, respectively. P values were calculated using an unpaired t-test. *P value < 0.001.
