Bile acid roles in inflammation and tissue repair modulation. TGR5 and FXR are two well-characterized bile acid receptors implicated in liver homeostasis. TGR5 activation on cholangiocytes and macrophages stimulates cell proliferation and decreases inflammatory signaling, respectively. Bile acid synthesis by hepatocytes is repressed by FXR activation.
