The graphs show cytokine levels (in nanograms per milliliter) in culture media after exposure to fecal filtrates of early and late stool samples at 4, 24, and 48 h. IL-6 (A) and IL-8 (B) levels were significantly higher after exposure to late stool samples compared to early stool samples and blank controls. The cytokine levels also increased significantly at 24 and 48 h compared to 4 h postexposure to fecal filtrates but not in blank controls (* indicates P < 0.05).
