ZIKV can infect NPCs in the developing cerebral cortex. Left panel: cerebral organoids are organised into a ventricular zone, subventricular zone, and cortical plate. Apical NPCs are shown in blue and reside at the apical/luminal side of the organoid, where the ventricular zone is located. Basal progenitors are shown in pink, and divide at the subventricular zone, further from the apical surface. Neurones are shown in pink at the cortical plate at the basal side of the organoid.
