Measures of muscle performance relevant to older adults

Muscle performance measure Description
Strength • Maximum capacity to generate force or tension
• Can be assessed using isometric handgrip dynamometry or a more dynamic measure of the 1-repetition maximum
Power • Rate of physical work performance
• Has a component of velocity that may be have clinical relevance for older adults
• Peak power is more closely associated with declines in physical function than muscle strength in older adults
Endurance • Ability to maintain a specific force output
• Related to functional capacity in older adults.
