Study name The 2nd European Carotid Surgery Trial (ECST‐2)
Methods A multicentre, randomised, controlled, open, prospective clinical trial with blinded outcome assessment
Participants People with symptomatic or asymptomatic atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis (> 50%, NASCET criteria), suitable for revascularisation with 5‐year Carotid Artery Risk (CAR) Score indicating risk < 20%
Interventions Immediate carotid revascularisation with modern optimised medical treatment or modern optimised medical treatment alone
Outcomes Primary outcome: any stroke at any time, plus non‐stroke death occurring within 30 days of revascularisation
Secondary outcome: ipsilateral stroke, myocardial infarction, TIA, or any hospitalisation for vascular disease during follow‐up
