A proposed potential inhibitory mechanism for improvement of the endothelial injury and inflammatory reaction of brain blood vessels in STZ induced-diabetic rats by gymnemic acid. The inner wall of blood vessels impacts high blood glucose conditions, resulting in brain hypoxia-induced angiogenesis and neovascular remodeling by upregulating Ang-1 and VEGF expression. VEGF protein and receptors increase lumen formation and decrease lumen diameter by proliferation of myointimal cells and collagen deposition, and Ang-1 serves important roles in angiogenesis and vascular development. STZ, streptozotocin; VEGF, vascular endothelial growth factor.
