Study name The coaching for smokers trial
Methods Single‐center double‐blind cluster‐randomized parallel controlled clinical trial
Participants Target: 60 general practitioners and 200 patients with a target cluster size of four
Interventions Intervention: general practitioners will be trained in coaching to promote a change in modifiable health risk factors including smoking, in group training sessions of 4 hours. Participants will receive individual coaching or counseling sessions from their general practitioners. The coaching will follow the principles of "Gesundheitscoaching‐KHM"
Control: participants will receive state‐of‐the‐art smoking cessation counseling
Outcomes Smoking cessation rates self‐reported at 1, 6 and 12 months and verified by saliva cotinine at 12 months
